'flagstone floor' project...
Written by Fiona Broadwood (aka Bea) of Petite Properties Ltd...
To adapt the project below simply reduce or enlarge the cardboard flagstone shapes as appropriate.
NB if you wish to complete this flooring effect in 1:48th you will also need to reduce the thickness of the cardboard used.

Materials...
- Medium Card (with a textured surface is ideal, but not essential)
- Mortar Paint Mix*
- Grey poster paint
- Black poster paint (in a blue/black shade)
- PVA Adhesive
*This is a homemade paint mixed to the colour you require for your individual cottage floor. I personally use a 'muddy green' type of colour and to make it I take a little yellow poster paint and add a small amount of black poster paint. Blend in a little blue to create the green tint. Mix well and store excess paint a jam jar. However for this project I have added more yellow to the mix to create the illusion of a more 'sandy' mortar between the flagstones.
Step 1... Cut out random shapes of textured card, in a variety of sizes. See fig. 1.
Step 4... Put a little grey poster paint or grey emulsion into a saucer then take a small block of firm sponge and spread the paint mix evenly over the flat edge of the sponge. Sponge paint the kitchen flagstones using a light dabbing motion, ensuring that the grey paint does not go into the gaps between the flagstones, see picture 4.
Leave to dry.
Step 2... Liberally spread PVA adhesive onto the floor area. Working on a small area at a time, stick down the card flagstone shapes, in a random arrangement.
Ensure that all edges of the flagstones are securely stuck down.
When the whole floor has been covered with card flagstones shapes, paint all over with one coat of PVA adhesive to seal the flagstones, particularly working the glue into the grooves. Leave to dry thoroughly and harden, ideally overnight.
Step 3... Using the mortar paint mix, paint the whole floor, thoroughly working the paint into all of the gaps between the flagstones, see picture 3.
Allow to dry completely.
Step 5... Next add a few drops of black poster paint into the saucer and spread the darkened paint evenly over the sponge. Again lightly dab the paint onto the flagstones.
Once the floor has completely dried it can be sealed, if required by sponging or painting on some quick drying water based matt varnish.
Different floor finishes can be achieved by cutting out alternative shapes from textured card…
