Colin Bird

I am an ex BT engineer and I have been making miniature furniture more or less full time since 1995 when I took advantage of the BT voluntary redundancy scheme.

I make a range of furniture from Georgian to Edwardian periods, including tables, dressers and desks, but I am probably best known for my Windsor chairs. All my chairs are based on full size originals, where possible copied from the original chair, or from photos and measurements supplied by customers. My furniture is all constructed as near as I can to full size practice, with everything properly jointed, and my aim is to make it look as authentic and realistic as possible. I use close grained woods such as cherry, laburnum, pear, apple and yew, stained where necessary to match the original, and finished with French polish and wax.

I accept commissions given some good photographs and measurements, and many of the items in my range started off as commissions. I work mainly in 1/12 scale but I can also make some items in 1/24.

You can see me and my work at the Birmingham Miniatura and the Kensington Dollshouse Festival.
